In an ancient times, stood very large Kingdom called the Kingdom of Prambanan.The Prambanan people lived with peace and prosperity under the leadership of King a named Prabu Baka. Prabu Baka is a wise leader and loved by his people.
In another place, also there is a kingdom is quiet large and powerful, namely the Kingdom of Pengging. People in this kingdom are very arrogant and always want to control other regions. This kingdom has a knight who has a magical power named Bondowoso. The knight always carried a powerful weapon named Bandung. That's why he is called Bandung Bondowoso.
Bandung Bondowoso has hundreds of spirit armies. These spirit armies always help him to conquer the royal territories of Kingdom of Pengging. Then, one day the king of Pengging give commandment to Bandung Bondowoso to attack the Kingdom of Prambanan. He immediately came attack the Kingdom of Prambanan and succeed in killing Prabu Baka. So that, the Kingdom of Prambanan has controlled by Bandung Bondowoso.
While he stay in Kingdom of Prambanan, he find a very beautiful woman. She is Prabu Baka's daughter, her name is Roro Jonggrang. He just fall in love instead and propose to her; "oh Roro Jonggrang, will you be my queen?"
Actually in her heart, she wants to reject his propose. But she did not dare openly to reject it. She tried to find the way to reject his propose, then she makes a requirement to him if he wants to her accept his propose. "Well, Bandung Bondowoso. I want to become your queen, if you can fulfill the requirement that I give to you." she said.
"What is your requirement to me?" he asked.
"Please make a thousand temples in one night for me." She answered.
He just agreed, because he has a big spirit armies who will help him to do it.
Then at the same night, he gathered his spirit armies and brought them to build a thousand temples according to Roro Jonggrang' request. These spirit armies immediately carried out his orders. The construction of temples is very fast, only in first quarter of the night that 997 temples has been built.
Roro Jonggrang became anxious and scared. Then she tried to find the way that how to thwart the development. She got an idea. She made the atmosphere like the next day morning which the day that he has to fulfill the requirements for a thousand temples. So that, he could be failed to fulfill her request.
She immediately called all of her ladies and gentlemen in the palace to be ordered to burn and ring the mortar. Also, she ordered to sprinkle very fragrant flowers . That commandment was did by her people. Soon, the sky seemed to glow red and the sound of mortar began to sound. The smell is smelled too. The roosters crow.
Because of this, the spirit armies just stopped and went. He shouted; "Hey, it is not morning yet! You should continue build these temples. But the spirit armies still leaves, then he just continued by himself to build it. But, when the morning comes he just finished till 999 temples. Another one still halfway on building progress. Then she came and said; "you have been failed to fulfill my request. I will not be your queen.
He embodies what she is doing. He was angry and cursing her said, "You brought Roro Jonggrang ! You deliberately thwarted the construction of a thousand temple. I curse you as a statue in the thousandth temple !
Then instantly, she turned into a statue in the thousandth temple. Till today the tourist can see this statue inside the temple complex. It is known as Roro Jonggrang temple.

Last but not least, Sukuh Temple is the most iconic old temple in Central Java. Located on the slopes of Lawu Mountain at an altitude of approximately 1,186m above sea level. Sukuh Temple has a distinctive thematic reliefs which vulgarly describes male and female genitals, namely Lingga (male) and Yoni (female), is very attractive to many tourists.
