7 Best Spot in Derawan Island, Do You Love Marine Life ?


Derawan Islands(Indonesian : Kepulauan Derawan) are in the province of East Kalimantan in Indonesia. Located in Sulawesi Sea, these islands are part of Berau Regency. It has a lot of tourist attractions that you may enjoy, especially for beach and surfing. 



Most famous islands here are Derawan Island, Kakaban Island, Sangalaki Island, and Maratua Island. Each of them has their own uniqueness. Besides that, Derawan Island has become UNESCO world heritage since 2005.

If you want to reach Derawan Island, there are two ways to get the access. Before that, you must arrived at Balikpapan city' Airport in East Kalimantan then the first option, using the airlines to reach Tarakan first. It takes 55 minutes trip then rent a speed boat to reach Derawan Island which will send you around 2 - 3 hours. Actually, this option will be suitable for you when do travelling in a group.

Then second option, using land transportation. Arrived in Balikpapan City' Airport, take a public bus, taxi or rent car then go to Berau City. Once you arrive in Berau City, you will find a lot of rent car to deliver you to Tanjung Batu Harbour where you can take a public speed boat to Derawan Island. To reach Derawan Island, this public speed boat only takes 30 minutes. This option will be suitable for you when do solo travelling.

Note : If you did not arrived in Balikpapan City' Airport, may you can through one of cities which are the section route that you pass through by land transportation when reach to Derawan Island : Palangkayaraya City (Central Kalimantan Province) - Banjarmasin City (South Kalimantan Province) - Balikpapan City (East Kalimantan Province) - Samarinda City (East Kalimantan Province) - Tanjung Redeb (East Kalimantan Province) - Tanjung Batu Harbour (In Berau Regency) - Derawan Island.

Here's the tourist places you must visit in Derawan Island.

1. Derawan Island


    This is the main island of Derawan Islands which is very famous with 
the clear water of the beach. Absolutely beautiful view outside and inside 
the water of the beach. You must bring your snorkling and diving equipments 
to enjoy the beach or rent the equipments on the spot and pay. 
If you get luck, you will dive with giant turtles and spotted sharks which are very friendy.
     
2. Kakaban Island 


    What do you think when you heard about "jellyfish" ? You may think is dangerous, due to they can bite you like spongebob squarepants movie. Do not worry about it ! Here is the place where you can swim with jellyfish peacefully. This island has a thousand of jellyfish even more but they never bite people. Another thing, the reason you must visit Kakaban Island is Kakaban Lake.

Kakaban lake is the combination of 4 kinds of water such as fresh water, sea water, ground water, and rain water. These waters are trapped in one spot then it forms a lake was called Kakaban Lake. Also the beach here has a clear blue water.

3. Kehe Daing Lagoon



    When you have arrived in Kakaban Island, do not miss this place ! Most tourist did not know this spot. Name of this spot is Kehe Daing Lagoon. Once you drop off from speedboat , you have to walk downwards pass through short-wide cave that full of water. So, a person who has problem with his/her back body healthy is not recommended to visit this place.

Then, after you get out of the cave, you will find spectacular view. Two Lagoons which have turquoise color water between their white sand beach. Its very clear and shallow, so that you can see all of the beautiful sea creatures inside with naked eyes. Even corals, starfish, nemo fish are visible from above.

For your information, Kehe Daing means fish hole in Bajo Language. They call fish hole because the shape of the cave you passed through before reach this lagoon.



4. Sangalaki Island





    If swimming with Jellyfish is not enough for you in Kakaban Island. Sangalaki Island offers you the icon of Derawan Islands is turtles. This place is known as house of turtles and the best place to do snorkling & diving in Derawan Islands. It has a lot of diving spots such as:
  • the rockies
  • eel ridge
  • sherwood forest
  • sandy ridge
  • turtle town
  • coral gardens
  • Manta Avenue
  • Manta Parade
  • Light House
  • Manta Run
  • Channel Entrance
Because Sangalaki Island is house of turtles, it has some unique kind of turtles such as green turtles and hawksbill turtles. If you want to see the turtles laying eggs, you must see at midnight. Besides that, if you are lucky, you will see Manta fish too, only in this island you can do swim with Manta Fish.

5. Maratua Island


    Well, I can say maybe this place is the best photostop. Its a perfect combination of views include a collection of mangroves, coral reefs, sea creatures, and International Resorts Standard. This place similar with Maldives Island. The color of water on the beach is tosca. Beautiful !

6. Haji Mangku Cave


    To reach this cave, you have to take a speedboat from Maratua Island which takes 15 minutes to arrive. This mysterious cave is located in the middle of forest, far from the town, shaped niche below like ravine which are dark and cold, even that you cannot see the water from above, but the water surfaces is clear. Only a little sunshine here, because a lot of trees. 

This place could be suitable for people who loves challenge , because you need to plunge from a height of 6 meters with makeshift footing.

7. Labuan Cermin Lake 


    The reason why this place call Labuan Cermin Lake (Anchor of Mirror Lake in english literally), because the water in this place is very clear as a crystal and mirror. You can enjoy this lake only by ship due to there are no bridge and land.

    To reach this place, you may need an extra effort. Located 7 hours from Tanjung Redeb City by land transportation to reach Labuan Cermin Harbour first then take a ship. Although it takes a lot of time and energy, it will be worth cause it just beautiful.

Most people come here after they finish their tour in Derawan Island. Then back to Airport in Tanjung Redeb City to continue to another destination.
