7 Best Spot in Berastagi City, Do You Love Hiking on The Mountain ?


Well, if you do not want to visit beaches but still want to enjoy nature view. This place will become the right place for your holiday. Then this place is suitable for tourists who looking for the cool air without feel hot and be sweaty. The temperature is only 22 degrees celcius at day, 16 degrees celcius at night. Berastagi is a city which has a title one of the most cold temperature city in Indonesia.

How to get Berastagi ?
Let me give a short information about Berastagi.

Berastagi is a city which located in Karo Regency (Karo is local tribe in North Sumatra Province). The capital city of North Sumatra Province is Medan city. Medan has a large International Airport was known as Kualanamu International Airport. This airport is third largest in Indonesia besides Jakarta - Soekarno Hatta Airport, and Bandung - Kertajati Airport.

So, to reach Berastagi, you must landed at Kualanamu Airport first which located in Medan city. The distance from Medan city to Berastagi city is 78 kilometers. For the transportation, you can take airport taxi to go Berastagi directly or you can rent a car before arrival.

But, if you really want to take public transportation, you can take DAMRI BUS from airport to Binjai, then stop at "Simpang Pos Medan". Then after arrive at "Simpang Pos Medan" then walk 100 meters to Terminal Bus then find a medium bus to Kaban Jahe ( The route section are "Simpang Pos Medan - Berastagi City - Kaban Jahe"). But please remember that you have to tell the driver that you will stop at Berastagi City so that you will not get lost. The total price should below IDR 50.000/pax from Kualanamu Airport.

Then after you have arrived at Berastagi, here is the list of places you may visit :
1.  Sikulikap Waterfall


     This water fall located in middle of forest and under Panatapan (Panatapan is culinary tourist places with nature views which provide snacks , but the most favorite snack is Grilled Corn). Although is located in middle of forest, you do not have to feel worry.

You will find a Welcome gate which has a sign written Sikulikap Waterfall (Air Terjun Sikulikap in Indonesian Language). This waterfall has height approxiamately 30 meters. To get here, you have to down the stairs which lead you to the waterfall and through the forest in 15 minutes.

2. Sibayak Mountain & Sidebuk-Debuk Hot Springs




    Sibayak is a volcano mountain that still active till today. Local people call this mountain is king of mountains.  Most tourists come here to enjoy the sunrise. If you love do hiking, you can start from night to enjoy the sunrise. It will push your adrenaline to do hiking at this mountain cause the path is full of rocks.


After you enjoy the sunrise, you can visit Sidebuk-sebuk Hot Springs at the same location. This hot springs contain sulfur from Sibayak Mountain which can heal skin diseases such as acnes, allergies, phlegm, etc. At the same time, you can enjoy the view of Sibayak Mountain in this place.

3. Gundaling Hills




    There was a story behind the name of Gundaling Hills. Once upon a time, a young man from England fall in love with a woman from Berastagi City. Both of them are loving each other, but the woman's parents oppose their relationship. So that, they decided to meet above hills.

That man just waited for her for a long time, but the woman never came. Then finally that England Man just shout by saying "good bye darling" which most people around heard the shouting, then Local People called this Hills is Gundaling till today.

What makes this place must be visited because it offerings the best nature views. On the hills, there were a lot of Pine Trees , beautiful flowers and human statues whom wearing traditional clothes. Most tourists come to this place to enjoy sunrise and sunset. You must take your picture here at least once, but I think it will be more. Because the nature background here is 2 mountains (Sibayak Mountain and Sinabung Mountain).

4. Berastagi Fruit Market




After enjoying the view of Gundaling Hills, lets find the local fruits. Because Berastagi is located on the highland which made this land produces a good quality of fruits and vegetables. Berastagi Fruit Market sell a lot kind of fruits and vegetables such as orange, strawberry, passion fruit, avocado, radish, carrot, cabbage, etc. 

The price here is very cheap. Just the tips for you, you can do bargain prices to seller, if you want to get cheaper. They are selling the items not only fruits and vegetables but also accesories, souvenirs, flowers, seed flowers, etc. So that, you can buy a lot of things to bring it home.

5. Lumbini Natural Park



Lumbini Natural Park is famous with the Gold Pagoda as the icon. This pagoda is the highest in Indonesia. In front of Pagoda, you will see a drum which used for buddhist worships then besides that there is a white elephant statue. Also you can enter the pagoda, if there is no buddhist worships at that day. Like most temples, it has buddha statue inside and the interior of this pagoda is full of unique carvings.

In here, you are not only seeing Pagoda, but behind the Gold Pagoda, it has a beautiful natural park and inside the park, there is a hanging bridge has length approxiamately 20 meters. So, you can enjoy the whole view of park from the bridge.

6. Heritage Museum Karo Berastagi



    Normally, if you visit a museum you will see a lot of local relics that you can not touch and always stick on the same spots, and the owner of relics is only one, and it can not be missing except stolen by thief.


But when you visit this museum, the relics here is only temporarily given by local residents who volunteered to be displayed. So, this museum has a lot of owner of the relics. A person who give the relics will be recorded and he can take it back if it is necessary. So far, this museum has 30 people who has registered their relics to be displayed such as local jewelry, ancient household appliances, traditional weapon, etc.


The purpose of local residents doing this, because they want to people or tourist can study about the heritage of local residents (Karo tribe). All of these relics are treated by professional.

7. Lingga Culture Village




Last but not least, if you really want to learn about culture and traditional architecture. Here is the place. Lingga Village has traditional houses which has aged 250 years and stand firm.

Each traditional house has special features and forms, inside the house, there is only a large room. These houses are not have small rooms. One house is occupied by 8-10 families. Traditional house is the house on stilts which have height approxiamately 2 meters from the ground that supported by poles which it is shaped by 16 pieces of large size wood. Under the house is used as a wood storing and cattle pen.
