7 Buildings that Shapes Indonesian Independence, nr. 7 is a Simple Old House

Last month, Indonesia has been celebrating 74th Independence Day which was held on 17 August. Usually the important dates or events has always the history behind it. There were stories, witnesses, and relics in a form of documents, objects and buildings. If you are traveler or explorer, then seeing the buildings are good choice. Here are the list of buildings that you need to know what influences Indonesia Independence History.

1. Gedung Sate (The Satay Building) - Bandung, West Java

It was built in 1920 with distinctive features in the form of skewer ornaments on its central tower, has long been a landmark of the city of Bandung in West Java Province. The history of Satay Building includes bloody events that occured during the war of independence is called "Bandung Lautan Api (Bandung' Sea of Fire) incident.

At that time, the youth movement took over the building from Japanese hands. To defend it, this youth movement formed a defense squad armed with the spoils from the Japanese army. On 4 October 1945, the city of Bandung was invaded by Allied troops who were accompanied by Dutch troops, so that the situation was increasingly unsafe. On 3 December 1945, the Satay Building was only defended by 21 fighters when an invasion by Gurkha troops supported by the Allies and the Netherlands used modern heavy weaponry at 01.00 A.M. A fierce battle lasted until 14 noon, and it was discovered that 7 young men were missing. This white building still stands firm but elegant and now functions as the central government building in West Java.

2. Gedung Merdeka (The Independence Building) - Bandung, West Java

During the Japanese occupation the building was called Dai Toa Kaman with its function as a cultural center. This building was used as the headquarters of Indonesian Youth to confront the Japanese army who were reluctant to give up their power to Indonesia during the proclamation of Independence of Indonesia on 17 August, 1945.

Time passed and Indonesia succeeded in proclaiming the independence. Correspondingly, the building that was originally occupied by Japan has now been taken over by Indonesian Youth. They made the Independence Building as a base for confronting the Japanese Army. As time went on, the building was also used as a workplace for the government of Bandung city.

The important event in 1955, was the Asia-Africa Summit held here. Designed by Van Galen Last and C.P Wolff Schoemaker, this building witnessed the birth of Dasasila Bandung, which contained statements about support for world peace and cooperation after the colonialist regime. The relics of that conference can be still seen till today.

3. Hotel Yamato/ Hotel Majapahit

Hotel Yamato or Hotel Majapahit (as known today) had the incident in 1945 which called the battle of Surabaya was fought between pro-independence Indonesian soldiers and militer against British and British Indian troops as a part of Indonesian National Revolution. After the emergence of the Indonesian Government's annoucement on 13 August 1945 which stipulated that starting on 1 September 1945 the national flag of Saka Merah Putih continued to be hoisted throughtout Indonesia, the flag-raising movement in Surabaya occured during the flag tear incident at Hotel Yamato/Hotel Majapahit.

A group of Dutchmen under the leadership of Mr.W.V.Ch.Ploegman on the night of September 18,1945, precisely at 21.00, waved the Dutch flag (Red-White-Blue), without the approval of Surabaya Regional Government, at the pole at the top level of Hotel. The next day, the Surabaya Youths saw it and became angry because the Dutch had insulted Indonesian sovereignty, wanted to restore power back to Indonesia, and insulted the red-and-white flag-raising movement that was taking place in Surabaya.

Shortly after the mass gathering at the Yamato Hotel. Residen Soedirman who are fighters and diplomats who were then serving as Deputy Resident, came through the crowd then entered to the hotel escorted by Sidik and Hariyono. As a Representative of Indonesia, both of them negotiated with Mr.Ploegman and his friends requested that the Dutch Flag be taken down from the top. But he refused. it was heated up and pulled out the gun.

Ploegman was strangled by Sidik, who was also later killed by Dutch soldiers, while Sudirman and Hariyono escaped outside the hotel. Some young men scrambled up to the hotel to lower the Dutch flag. They tore the blue part, and hoisted it to the top of flagpole again as the Red and White flag.

The peak of the battle was in November 1945. The battle was the heaviest single battle of the revolution and became a national symbol of Indonesia Resistance. Considered a heroic effort by Indonesians, the battle helped galvanise Indonesian and International Support for Indonesian Independence, the 10 November is celebrated annually as Heroes' Day.

4. Museum Perumusan Naskah Proklamasi (Museum of Formulation of the Proclamation Text) - Jakarta

It was built in 1920 with European Architecture Style.  The building area is 1,138.10 m2. During the Japanese Occupation, this building the residence of Admiral Tadashi Maeda, Head of the Liaison Office between the Navy and the Japanese Army, until the Allies landed in Indonesia in September 1945. After the Japanese defeat, the building became the Headquarters of British Army.

There was an event that occured before the Proclamation of August 17,1945, namely the Formulation of the Proclamation Manuscript which was carried out in the former residence of Admiral Tadashi Maeda's residence. The event is one of a series of history that is very important for the Indonesian people. Because this place is the establishment of the Unitary Republic of Indonesia was initiated.

In 1984, the Minister of Education and Culture, Prof.Dr.Nugroho Notosusanto instructed the Directorate of Museum to realize this historic building into the Museum of Formulation of the Proclamation Text. Because of its the location and the building have historical value that is very important for Indonesian People. As historical museum, this museum will reveal events that have happened in the past, where the conditions at that time would not be possible to see at the present time without describing the event.

5. Kompleks Istana Negara dan Istana Merdeka (The Independent Palace and State Palace) - Jakarta

The Independent Palace and State Palace Complex cover 6.8 hectares and are in the heart of country's capital. In the early days of the Republic Indonesia government, this palace witnessed the signing of the text of recognition of the sovereignity of United Republic of Indonesia by the Dutch Government on December 27,1949. Republic of Indonesia was represented by Sri Sultan Hamengkubowono IX, while Netherlands was represented by A.H.J Lovink. The signing of the Republic of Indonesia sovereignty text was carried out at the sama time both in Netherlands and Indonesia.

Meanwhile, on the same day in various places and corners of the country, hundreds of thousand of Indonesians gathered around their respective radio sets, waiting for broadcasts from Jakarta that brought the extraordinary news. Immediately the news of signing ceremony and submission of the manuscript on the recognition of the United Republic of Indonesia sovereignty. Immediately the red and white Flag fluttering in place of the Dutch Flag, the Indonesia song resounded, and the exclamation of independence, echoed in all corners homeland. It is the reason that palace was called "The Independent Palace". Since then, the Commemoration of the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia on August 17 at Independent Palace was first held in 1950.

Now the Independent Palace is used for organizing state events, including the second Proclamation Commemoration, the reception ceremony for state guests, and the delivery of credentials of ambassadors from friendly countries.

6. Radio Republik Indonesia ( Radio of Republic of Indonesia) - Jakarta

National Radio Day is celebrated every 11 September. Radio of Republic of Indonesia had built since 11 September 1945. There was a story behind it. It was established a month after the radio broadcast of Hoso Kyoku was stopped on 19 August 1945. At that time, the public became blind to information and did not know what to do after Indonesia' Independence. Moreover, foreign radio at that time reported that British troops in the name of the allies would occupy Java and Sumatera Province.

The British Army is rumored to be disarming the Japanese army and maintaining security until the Dutch governmentcan regain its power in Indonesia. It was also known from the news that the allies still recognized the Dutch sovereignty over Indonesia and the Dutch kingdim was rumored to be establishing the government of the Netherlands Indie Civil Administration (NICA).

In response, people who had been active on Radio during the Japanese occupation realized that radio was a necessary tool for the government of the Republic of Indonesia to communicate and provide guidance to the people about what needed to be done. Representatives from 8 former Hosu Kyoku radios held a meeting with the government in Jakarta.

On September 11, 1945 at 17.00, the radio delegation had gathered at the former Raad Van Indje Pejambon building and was received by the secretary state. Abdulrahman Saleh who was the head of delegation outlined the plan at the meeting. One of them is appealing to the government to establish radio as a communication tool between the government and the people since allied troops will land in Jakarta at the end of September 1945. Radio was chosen as a communication tool because it is faster and not easily interupted during fighting.

At the end of the meeting, Abdulrachman Saleh made conclusions, among others, the formation of the Indonesian Radio Association which would continue broadcasting from 8 stations in Java, present RRI to the President and the Government of Indonesia as a means of communication with the people, and appealed for all relations between the government and RII to be channeled through him. Thanks to radio information, Indonesia was finally able to realize its independence through the momentum of the proclamation. Today, RRI is still airing and present to provide the news to public.

7. Rumah Rengasdengklok (Rengasdengklok House) - Karawang District, West Java

Rengasdengklok's house is located in Bojong Tugu Village, Karawang District in West Java Province. It is very historic. This house was used a place for negotiations between the youth led by Soekarni and Soekarno-Muhammad Hatta to discuss Indonesian independence.  This house was once the home of a Chinese person named Babah Djiaw Kie Siong.  This white and green teak wood house is on the edge of the Citaru, River. It is still maintained as it is.

In this house, some young people on the eve of the proclamation of Indonesian Independence, urged 2 important people are Mr. Soekarno and Mr.Soehatta to immediately proclaim Indonesian Independence. This house is a witness of the proclamation struggle because it was made a place for Soekarno and Soehatta to be hidden by young people who urged immediate Indonesian independence to be announced.

This house was considered safe at that moment, because Rengasdengklok was the territory of the PETA army and was far from Japanese rule. This house belongs to Djiaw Kie Siong, a chinese-man became local resident who works daily as a farmer. Djiaw Kie Siong's family descendants are still faithfully occupying and caring for this historic building.
