Each country has the unique festival for their special day or event such as thanksgiving, new baby born, wedding, birthday celebration, new year, Christmas, and Independence Day. The Independence day is one of the most important celebration in each country to celebrate the victory over colonialism. Indonesia celebrate the independence day at 17 August anually since 1945 till today. Of course, that will be some games or events to celebrate Independence Day in Indonesia. If you are the International tourist, you will find it everywhere in all of parts Indonesia even in the village. Here are the following list, do not miss it!
1. Panjat Pinang (Climbing Slippery pole)

Climbing slippery pole has always been waiting for. Because this competition offers lots of funny excitement. It is a traditional games which held annually in welcoming Independence day. Before the competition starts, areca nut trunks will be smeared with lubricant to make it slippery. Then, the top of the tree hung various attractive prizes such as DVD Player, Television, bicycle, fan, rice cooker, pan, bag school, Instant noodles, etc.
Many participants worked together to get the prizes that had been hung on the wood. The excitement, humor, persistence, and cohesiveness shown at the activity. Even after the struggle to sweat and the energy did not produce the prize that was targeted even, the competition still give the excitement. The main poin of this game is togetherness and team-work as a united Indonesian people.
2. Lomba Balap Karung (Sack Race Competition)

Sack racing is a fast-paced contest, but using the sacks. It is held annually at Independence Day in Indonesia. Sack Race competition initially using gunny sacks which are stronger than rice sacks. However, because the gunny sacks are more difficult to obtain and increasingly rare, now most people using rice sacks to play this game.
This game is very easy to be played. Determine the start and finish line, with a distance of about 10 meters or along the volleyball or badminton court. The participant must enter into the sack before the cue of sack racing begins. After the cue is given, the participants can run or jump but still use the sack until reach the finish line. A person who reach the finish line in fastest way is the winner.
Sack Racing is a historical part of Japan occupation in Indonesia before the Independence. It reminds the pain of colonialism and the poverty of Indonesians even they could not afford buy clothing in during Japan occupation era. So that, gunny sacks are used instead.
3. Lomba Makan Kerupuk (Eating Crackers Competition)

Eating crackers is a popular Indonesian Traditional game at Independence Celebration. This competition is done by hanging the crackers on a rope tied to wood or bamboo. The Crackers are commonly used round white crackers. The participants compete to eat their crackers, and the winner is the participant who consumes the crackers the fastest. The challenge of this game is the participants are not allowes to use their hands in eating crackers, but only allowed to use their mouths.
The purpose of eating crackers competition, to reminisce that Indonesia Warriors in Japan Occupation era is hard to find a good food. At that time, rice with crackers are delicious and it was Warriors' Favorite food. Besides that, it has meaning struggle, passion with high confidence, be grateful for God' blessing and the independence, and strengthen the sense of unity with each other. But this game is total fun and full of laugh. To watch this competition is a must !
4. Lomba tarik tambang (Tug-of-War Competition)

The tug-of-war game involves two teams with 5 or more participants. These two teams competed from two opposite sides and all participants held tight a rope. In the middle there is a boundary in the form of a line. Each team tries to pull the rope as hard as possible so that the opposing team crosses the boundary line. The team that is interested in crossing the line the line is declared defeated.
The tactics of the game lie in the placement of the player, tensile strength and footstool defense on the ground. In general, the player with the most power is placed at the end of the rope, to hold the end of the rope while holding on or stomping on withdrawal. The purpose of this game is how team can work together in conquering enemies. Not only a fight strength, but also prioritize a compact team to achive victory. Through this game, the participants indirectly learn about mutual cooperation, togetherness, and solidarity.
5. Balap Bakiak (Clog Racing)

Clog Racing is a speed race using clogs. Clogs are long wooden sandals/slippers that only use old rubber tires that must be used by two or three people and more. The difficulty in racing clogs that it requires group participants to walk even run in a compact hand. Collaboration and group cohesiveness are really demanded in clog racing.
What makes clog racing is funny that there must be a group that is not compact when walking. The right foot and left foot must move together and constantly until they reach the finish line. So, clog racing has a higher level of difficulty than other individual races. It is perfect for strengthening friendship and family. It also have a very high philosophical meaning so that life can work well together.

There are two common ways to do marbles racing. First method is to bring marbles placed on a tablespoon toward the designated finish line. Anyone who crosses the finish line with marbles still on the spoon is the winner of marbles race.
The second method is by using a relay system that is done in groups to bring marbles on a spoon then hand them to other players and then collect them in a container such as a bucket or large basin. For this method to determine the winner is to see the number of marbles that are most collected by the competing groups.
Marbles Racing can train motor skills, thinking ability, concentration, perseverance, teach children to compete and have a spirit of sportsmanship. Here you will be trained to make decisions in life.

Last but not least, this game is very fun if you can join in. Actually this game could be applied in anywhere by yourselves. The game of inserting nails/pencils into a bottle depicts a child's attempt to insert a nail/pencil that is hung by using a rope into a bottle. The game is usually done in pairs, one child is tasked to put nails/pencils that are hung into a bottle while the other child is tasked to give a signal.
To play this game, the committee will installs bottles in designated line. Then, attach nails/pencils which has been given a strap to the back of participants' pants. All participants must prepare at the start line, a straight view of each bottle prepared by the committee, the start distance to the bottles is around 10 meters. On the count of thres, participants run to the bottle, after turning around (facing towards the start line), while squatting and trying to insert nails/pencils into the bottle, assisted by the cue by his friend. Participants' hands does not hold the nail/pencil strap. After the nail/pencil has entered the bottle, participants will immediately bring the bottle with the nail still in the bottle towards the starting line.
The winner is the one of the participants will put the nail/pencil in the bottle the fastest and bring it to the starting line. Participants are declared disqualified if the entry of a nail/pencil into the bottle is assisted by the participants' own hands. The purpose of this game is to practiced the concentration, patience, and moved quickly. These things are needed to achieve a target and goal.
