Maybe you never heard before the name of this city. That's why it could be categorized one of hidden island in Indonesia. Located on the top of East Java Province, nearby Bali Island which only takes 1 hour trip Via Ferry to reach this city. This city has a lot of scenery to be seen.
This city is called Banyuwangi. Why is that so? There's a legend behind the name of the city. But in shortly, the name of Banyuwangi is from 2 words, Banyu (means: water) and Wangi (means: fragrance), there's a love story behind it. In literally, Banyuwangi is fragrance water. This city offers a lot of tourist attraction especially beaches and waterfalls, but the most famous attraction is Ijen Crater. It will be explained further on the list.
Banyuwangi is probably not as well-known as Bali, but does not mean it should be skipped. There are hidden paradise inside Banyuwangi that not many have heard of and that is exactly why you should be the first one to discover this beautiful secret place. Located between the Strait of Bali and a mountain,makes it a destination where you can have it all. Here are 7 destinations you should discover for yourself !
1. Ijen Crater
Ijen Crater is well-known with
blue flames view. This crater is a lake above Ijen Mountain which formed due to
the eruption of Ijen Mountain. The temperature is around 10 degrees Celcius and
below. Also, you will find Edelweiss Flower and Mountain Fir.
If you want to see the best
scenery at Ijen Crater, you have to start exploring this mountain from
midnight. If you walk at midnight and are lucky enough (without fog and bad weather) , you will see the blue flames at 2-5 A.M
where appears in the middle of way (located at sulfur mining). This blue flames
is most haunted by tourist, because only be seen at Ijen Crater and Iceland.
After that, at 6 A.M above at the peak of Ijen Mountain, you will be presented
with a view of Ijen crater lake which has Tosca colored.
This place has 3 waterfall in different 2 section. First is the single waterfall which has a height of 10 meters. Then the second waterfall is "twin waterfall" which has a height 30 meters and located behind the backyard of residents. This place is open at 07.30 a.m - 04.30 p.m and the entrance fee is IDR 5,000/person.
If you want to have diving and snorkling activities on your holiday, here is the right place. Watudodol beach is an open gate to reach Menjangan Island and Tabuhan Island. The unique characteristic of the beach, is not sandy but full of coral rocks and the water is very clear. Another thing, there's a Gandrung Dancer statues above the building. That's the Icon of Banyuwangi city. In 2018, this beach got the the reward as ASEAN clean Tourist City.
What is the interesting point of both Island is the spots of diving and snokling. Menjangan Island is a place for Conservation Park for Deer. Then, Tabuhan Island is a place for resting. Inside the sea, you will find thousand beautiful marine view, aquarium fish spesies (Amphiprion the Dacyllus, the red coloured Labrida and Gorisygula), shellfish, sponges, crayfish and marine plants. These diving spots are top 10 in the world. Do not miss it !
4. Red Island Beach
There's a reason behind the name of Red Beach. This beach has an attraction point, is a small hill which has height approx. 200 meters in the middle of the sea and the colour of the land is red. But it will not be seen, due to covered by a lot of trees. This hill can be climbed if the water is receding. You just need to walk.
Besides that, the sand of the beach itself looks red. That colour comes from wet sand that is exposed to sunset or summer days. Here, you can learn to surf if you are first timer with the coach, due to the waves has the height only 2-5 meters. That's why you can swim too if you do not want to surf or enjoy the sunset.
5. Kalibendo Waterfall
This is another famous waterfall in Banyuwangi. Located on hillside of Ijen Mountain, it has height 10 meters. Also it offers 3 agrotourists in the one place such as coffee plantation, rubber plantation, and clove plantation. If it doesn't get your attention, this place offers a light exercise such as canoeing, hiking, swimming, photo hunting, and cycling. Worth a try!
6. Alas Purwo National Park
If you love to see the scenery of African desert style, here is the right place. It is open-wilderness to see a lot of wild animal such as Bulls, Deer, Green Peacocks, wild boars, and other wild animals. The best scenery will come up when you come at 6 - 9 a.m (especially the peacocks) and 3.30 - 5.00 p.m. At that time, most animals will be gather to get the food and to play.
The name of Alas Purwo National Park in the local language means the first and oldest forest in Java Island. It is lived by 700 kinds of flower, 50 kinds of mammal, 320 kinds of bird, 15 kinds of amphibian, and 48 kinds of reptiles. Also, because it is located directly adjacent to the Indonesian Ocean, there is a lot of beaches around and the most well-known is Plengkung beach (G-land beach)
7. Plengkung Beach (G-Land)
Last but not least, this is one of the best beaches in the world for surfing and many International competitions have been held here. This beach is still a part of Alas Purwo National Park.
With the height of waves around 4 - 8 meters and the length are 2 kilometers, also has 7-tiered wave formation. You will find this ideal waves when you come at April - August, is totally an perfect place for Surfer-lover.
Also, the interesting point of Plengkung Beach or G-land has 3 colours of the water in one place consists of white, green, and blue. Actually, there are few versions why this beach is called G-Land.
Version 1 : G-Land is from name of Grajangan Bay
Version 2: G-Land means Green Land, because this beach is located in green forest.
Version 3: G-Land means Great Land, are big, long, and full of challenge
Version 4: G-Land is because of the formation of the beach itself when looked from above by satellite
