7 best spot in Dieng Plateau, Do you Want To Have Experience with Crater ?

What comes on your mind about Plateau ? Hiking, Challenge, Adventure or Cold Air?

Let me give a little information about Dieng Plateau.

Dieng Plateau is formed by volcanic eruptions around Java Province, which has height 2.093 meters above sea level, located in two districts are Wonosobo and Banjarnegara, central Java Province.

Dieng Plateau has a lot of nature resource especially on agriculture. This place offers cool air, beautiful mountains, charming natural lakes, sunrise and sunset, even the culture. It attracts a lot of tourists to visit this place. 

The name of Dieng has a meaning that 'diyang or dhiyang' is the place where Gods dwell. The unique thing from this place that normal temperature on noon is 12 - 17 C degrees, even on summer season, the temperature could below zero C degrees so that produce snow around plateau. Do not forget bring your jacket or coat !

Also, this place is known as country above the clouds. Because you can see on the below that the clouds like waves on the sea. Here's the list you must visit here.

1. Sunrise at Sikunir Hills.



     This is the best place to enjoy the sunrise at Dieng Plateau. You have to come at dawn to see the golden sunrise with red sky. It will be the best picture of nature on your list ! Here is the challenge, to reach Sikunir Hills, you have to climb up the hill stairs which is is quite high then added the super cold air at the morning. But it will pay off when you have reached the top. Most tourist will stay 1 night before to see the sunrise.

Then after enjoy the sunrise, you can go down to enjoy local culinary and buy some souvenirs.

2. Sikidang Crater



    After visiting Sikunir Hills, this is the place you must visit. Sikidang Crater is a hot crater which has cloud of smoke and the smell of stinging sulfur. But do not worry, due to this crater has fenced off by wood and this place is safe for tourist. I suggest you to bring a mask to cover your nose and mouth, if you do not want to smell the sulfur.

The unique thing of Sikidang Crater that the main crater often move around or spread, so that local people call this place 'kidang' means deers. In this area, there is a lot small craters with boiling water. The boiling water temperature approxiamately 100 celcius degress. This water has health benefit such as for acne and itchy treatment. Then, you can enjoy the colours of crater and eat boiled egg which cooked on the boiling water on the crater.

3. Arjuna Temple



    After visiting Sikidang Crater, maybe you want to learn about history. This Hindu temple was a heritage of King Mataram to worship God of Syiwa. It consists of five parallel temple such as Arjuna temple, Srikandi temple, Puntadewa Temple, Sembadra Temple, and Candi Semar. It built in the seventh century, all of five temples are small buildings. Each of them has the uniqueness on the architecture.


This temple used for Dieng Culture festivals. If you are luck, you will see the show of the festival ( in local language (upacara ruwatan rambut gimbal or ceremony of shaving dreadlocks). 

4. Telaga Warna Lake (Colours Lake in english literally)



     Dieng Plateau has a few of Lakes, but the most unique is Colours Lake. Because this lake has so many colours rose on surface such as green, blue, brown, and etcetra. That colours caused by sulfur on the lake emitted by sunlight (sun reflection). When you come at the main gate, you will see hortensia flowers, then the most iconic of this place is two larges tree trunks on lake surface for photo spot. The best time to come this place at noon !

5. Batu Pandang Ratapan Angin (The Rock Cliff)

    If you want to get a view of Colours Lake and Pengilon Lake from above, here is the place. To reach this place, you must have strong physical body because this place is quite high. Once you have reached the top, you will admire of the view of mountain and two lakes from above.



Also this place has bridge where you can the view from above better, that is still challenging, due to the bridge just made from wooden beams section and raffia. You have to be careful when you are walk in this cliff too.

6. Sunrise and Sunset at Prau Mountain



    Prau mountain has the shape like boat and height 2.565 meters above sea level. The unique thing from this mountain, you can see the sea of clouds hanging around the mountain and green village around the slope of mountain. You can choose to enjoy the sunrise or sunset at this place. Both offers amazing view of sky.

But, this place for people who love challenges and adventures. If you want to enjoy the sunrise, you have to do hiking around 2 - 3 hours for professional, and 3- 4 hours for junior or first timer. The best time to start hike this mountain at 01.00 AM for sunrise. Make sure that you have strong physical body, wear tracking shoes, bring jacket, hat, and gloves, because the air is cold and windy.

This mountain has a thousand hills. So that people call this place Teletubbies Hill. You will see white, yellow, pink, and red daisy too.

7. Dieng Plateau Theater & Kaliasa Museum



    Last but not least, if you want to find out about the culture and heritage of local people, here are the place. First is Dieng Plateau Theater. When you pass the route to get here, you will be welcomed by morning glory which has orange and pink colour around the way. When you enter to the theater, the staff will play the documentary movie about Dieng Plateau such as geographical, history, social, culture, and how to shaped Dieng Plateau these days.

That movie will be played around 23 minutes. The maximum capacity of seats is for 100 people. You just need to come and the staff will play it for you.


Second is Kaliasa Museum. This place is archeology museum for education about heritage in Dieng Plateau such as statues, reliefs, incriptions and components of temple buildings which are mostly made by Andesite Stones. This museum has another movie about what shaped Dieng these days based on geograhpy and history.
